Our Planet Friendly Pods

Coffee Pods are extremely convenient, it’s why so many Australians love them.  However given the sheer volume consumed everyday it’s important to consider the impact they can have on our environment.

At The Pod Lab, we only use 100% Biodegradable and Compostable ‘Biocap’ capsules which we’ve sourced from a local supplier here in Australia.

Compostable to Australian standards

The biocapsule is certified as OK COMPOST AS4736 (Australian Standard) by TÜV Austria/ Vincotte. The biocapsule is made of a bioplastic (Terrablend®), which is made of renewable raw materials. The technical additives are also biodegradable and environmentally friendly. Also in the production process, particular importance is placed on manufacturing the biocapsules in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner.

Sustainable & environmentally friendly

Through the use of biodegradable seal paper, the biocapsule is completely free from aluminium!  Biocap is also certified by Climate Partners as CO2/ climate neutral. Biocaps are produced using energy generated from wind, sun, hydropower and biogas.

Most coffee capsules use an aluminium sachet to keep the coffee fresh, but we don’t. Aluminium not only leaves a nasty toxic trail after disposal, but is also non-renewable, and requires lots of energy and chemicals to produce.

How long does it take to compost?

There are many factors that can influence the composting process (like temperature, the time of year, and the location of your compost bin, just to name a few). In fact, there are so many factors that come into play it’s hard to tell exactly when your used capsules will be fully decomposed. What we can say is that after 12-weeks in an industrial composter, you could pass what’s left of the used capsule through a 2×2mm mesh.  At home, the time will vary considerably but we have had great success home composting in the Brisbane climate - particularly in Summer.

Our pods are also biodegradable

So if you're not a home composter you can simply dispose of them in your regular rubbish bin and be confident in the knowledge your capsules will end up biodegrading over time as landfill.

Please feel free to contact us directly if you'd like any further information around our capsules and we'll be happy to help!
